B. Programs

The first meeting of what was to become the Western History Association was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in October 1961. The WHA continues to hold an annual conference in October. Conference programs are mailed in July.

The WHA is governed by its members who elect a president, president-elect, council, and nominating committee. The WHA offers membership to anyone interested in the study of the North American West. An annual membership includes a one year subscription to Western Historical Quarterly, the premier scholarly journal in the field, with articles and book reviews by leading western historians; discounted rates for the annual conference; and eligibility for awards and prizes in recognition of scholarly achievements in Western history.

C. Publications

The Western Historical Quarterly is the official, peer-reviewed journal of the Western History Association. Reflecting the association’s mission to cultivate diverse scholarship, the Western Historical Quarterly publishes original articles dealing with the North American West, undefined expansion and colonization, indigenous histories, regional studies (including western Canada, northern Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii), and transnational, comparative, and borderland histories. Articles undergo rigorous peer review and appear online as part of JSTOR’s Current Scholarship Program.

The association sponsors a number of annual and biennial awards for books, articles, public history, student scholarships, and fellowships.
