AHA Affiliated Society

The Committee on Lesbian and Gay History was founded in 1979, and its name was changed to the Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender History in January 2009. Since 1982, the Committee has been officially recognized as an affiliate of the American Historical Association and meets annually in conjunction with the AHA conference, where we sponsor sessions on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history. One need not be a member of the AHA to join the Committee.

B. Programs

Since 1982, the Committee on LGBT History has been officially recognized as an affiliate of the American Historical Association. The Committee on LGBT History encourages the development of specialized courses in LGBTQ studies as well as the inclusion of LGBTQ topics in general history courses. It promotes local history archives and projects and coordinates activities with other professional caucuses. The Committee on LGBT History also seeks to prevent discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer historians, in keeping with AHA policies.

The Committee on LGBT History meets annually in conjunction with the AHA, where it sponsors sessions on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history. One need not be a member of the AHA to join the Committee on LGBT History.

C. Publications

The Committee on LGBT History publishes a newsletter two times a year and maintains an e-mail announcements list, a Facebook page, and a web page.

D. Fellowships and Awards

The Committee on LGBT History awards six scholarly prizes in alternating years. The John Boswell, Joan Nestle, and Don Romesburg Prizes are awarded in odd-numbered years. The John Boswell Prize is awarded for an outstanding book on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer history published in English. The Joan Nestle Prize is awarded for an outstanding paper on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer history completed in English by an undergraduate student. The Nestle Prize is funded by the generous contributions of the Committee on LGBT History lifetime members. The Don Romesburg Prize is awarded for outstanding K-12 curriculum in LGBT history.

The Gregory Sprague, Audre Lorde, and Allan Bérubé Prizes are awarded in even-numbered years. The Gregory Sprague Prize is awarded for an outstanding published or unpublished paper, article, book chapter, or dissertation chapter on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer history completed in English by a graduate student. The Audre Lorde Prize is awarded for an outstanding article on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer history written in English by a North American. The Allan Bérubé Prize is awarded for an outstanding public history project on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer history.
