Doctoral Program Information

A. Program Description. The Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Modern World History redefines and reclaims the vital roles that professionals with advanced humanities training play in our complex, global society. It combines traditional academic rigor in research with an emphasis on new pedagogies, interdisciplinary study, technology, collaborative work, community engagement, and a unique approach to internship training. The program is geared toward both the traditional full-time doctoral student and the working professional seeking a degree part-time.

B. Special Programs. The degree offers diverse internship possibilities found in New York City, and also draws on a wide range of Public History resources.

C. Financial Aid. A limited number of Doctoral Fellowships, which offer tuition remission and a stipend, are available to qualified full-time graduate students. University Doctoral Fellowships, which provide tuition remission for up to two graduate courses in each semester, are available to part-time graduate students.

D. Degree Requirements. The degree requires 60 credits, which includes a professional methods course (3 credits), four world history seminars (12 credits), and 9 other graduate history courses (27 credits). Additionally, there are internship hours (6 credits) and dissertation hours (12 credits).
