Doctoral Program Information
A. Program Description. Our comparative doctoral program emphasizes Atlantic and transnational histories. Core courses include comparative or Atlantic history seminars; an intensive methods course; and a two-semester research seminar in which students have an opportunity to investigate topics in depth and write an article-length study. A variety of other graduate seminars are offered to deepen students' understanding of traditional regional and national histories of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the United States, Europe, and Asia. They also expose students to the social, cultural, political and economic intersections throughout the Atlantic world. Notable areas of strength include public history; imperialism and colonialism; the history of law; New World slavery; the Mediterranean world; and gender and sexuality. Students benefit from affiliation with the nationally-recognized Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC), a Title VI-funded center, the African and African Diaspora Studies program, and the Asian Studies Program. All offer a variety of funding opportunities for research and certificate programs, language training, and research abroad.
B. Special Programs. The Department's Graduate History Students Association is extraordinarily active and sponsors events of student interest, including an active Atlantic History Colloquium Series and an intensive annual conference. The Green Library has a number of special collections, with particular strengths in Latin American history including Cuba and musicology; Miami history; and well-developed resources on slavery and the Atlantic world. The Frost Museum and the Jewish Museum of South Florida provide a lively museum culture. The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum boasts an extensive collection of material culture and visual culture artifacts, primarily of US and European origin, dating from 1885-1945, which many students incorporate into their research.
C. Financial Aid. The department offers competitive Teaching Assistantships. Doctoral students are supported throughout all 12 months of the year, starting at $24,000, normally for four years. The Department also has a strong track record in garnering University Fellowships such as the prestigious Presidential Fellowship for entering students, and in certain cases a fifth year of funding can be offered. In addition, the University provides doctoral research and dissertation-year fellowships on a competitive basis, along with other funding opportunities for language training and research abroad. These include the Tinker Field Research program administered by LACC and international research grants sponsored by the School of International and Public Affairs. Students also benefit from small grants for yearly research trips and support to conference participation.
D. Degree Requirements. The PhD requires a minimum of 75 credit hours after the BA. Qualifying exams are taken in three fields: core, breadth, and comparative.
