Doctoral Program Information

We have overall strengths in US; Modern Europe; Latin America; Middle East and Islam; Asia; Atlantic World; and thematic strengths in Public History; Gender and Women’s History; History of Science, Technology, and the Environment; and War and Society. In addition, the department houses the Weider Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution which interacts on campus with FSU's Winthrop-King Institute on French and Francophone Studies. The department also houses the Women’s Studies Program, an interdisciplinary initiative. The library has a very deep collection on French history and culture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Students can also utilize sources and learn archival skills working in the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience in the department. Teaching assistantships and graduate assistantships are available for many qualified students. The department and the University also offer several competitive fellowships. At the PhD level, 36 hours of course work, a portfolio, and oral comprehensive exams are required.
