Founded in 1892, the Colonial Society of Massachusetts is a non-profit educational foundation designed to promote the study of Massachusetts history from earliest settlement through the first decades of the nineteenth century.

B. Programs
The Colonial Society of Massachusetts publishes documents related to early Massachusetts history and holds occasional scholarly conferences on related topics, often printing the proceedings. The society also conducts workshops and provides other support for K–12 history teachers in Massachusetts and holds periodic forums for graduate students to share work in progress.
C. Publications
The society has published 99 volumes of documents related to early Massachusetts history.
D. Fellowships and Awards
The society provides a subvention to the New England Quarterly and awards annually the Walter Muir Whitehill Prize ($2,500 and publication in the New England Quarterly) for a distinguished essay in colonial history, previously unpublished. Preference is given to New England topics. Submissions should be received by the society by December 31 of each calendar year.
