Doctoral Program Information
A. Program Description. Our goal is to engage graduate students and faculty in individual and collective interdisciplinary investigations of historical thought, and in research on the historical experiences of humanity in different times and places. Our graduates have become outstanding teachers at universities and colleges throughout the world, and made multiple innovative and enlightening contributions to the study of history, whether as teachers, researchers, public historians, or independent scholars.
B. Special Programs. The University of Michigan's Library system is consistently ranked as one of the top ten academic research libraries in North America. The University Library comprises 19 libraries on the University of Michigan campus and offers a wealth of resources in traditional as well as digital formats. Major historical repositories include the Clements Library, Bentley Library, and Hatcher Library Special Collections. The Library's expert staff is committed to helping patrons tap the full potential of these information resources and to providing a full spectrum of assistance for research and teaching. The UM Library system may be accessed on the web at http://www.lib.umich.edu/.
Founded in 1962, the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) at the University of Michigan was the first teaching center in the country. CRLT partners with U-M faculty, graduate students, and administrators to promote a university culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and encourages the creation of learning environments in which diverse students can learn and excel. CRLT resources may be accessed on the web at http://www.crlt.umich.edu/index.php.
The University of Michigan Institute for Social Research (ISR) is the world's largest academic social science survey and research organization. A leader in developing and applying new social science methods, the ISR is committed to educating and training the next generation of empirical social and behavioral scientists. A listing of ISR educational resources can be found on the web at http://www.isr.umich.edu/home/education/.
The Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies, established in 2006 by a generous gift by Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg, provides a world-class forum for historical research and teaching. The institute aims to stimulate imaginative new scholarship and innovative teaching, contributing to the study of history nationally as well as transmitting new modes of historical understanding to successive generations of students. In so doing, the Institute seeks to enrich the department and university community generally and to help bridge the divide that tends to open between graduate student and faculty academic life.
C. Financial Aid. The History Department, the Rackham Graduate School and the College of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan offer all students admitted to the PhD program in history a six-year program of support. This six-year funding package includes three years of fellowship support and three years of a Graduate Student Instructorship. All graduate students receive four years of additional summer support. The timing and distribution of this support is customized to the individual needs and eligibility of each student. The fellowship and instructorships include stipends, tuition and medical insurance. Our funding package is conditional upon satisfactory progress toward the degree and satisfactory fulfillment of teaching obligations.
D. Degree Requirements. Students are expected to complete coursework as Pre-Candidates in the first two, or occasionally three, years of study. The preliminary examination qualifying students to write the dissertation must be taken before the end of the third year of study. After passing preliminary examinations, students are encouraged to complete dissertation research and writing in accord with the demands of their research topics. Ideally, students will complete all requirements for the PhD within six to seven years.
