Doctoral Program Information

A. Program Description. The History Department at Notre Dame offers PhD training in four fields: the United States, Europe, Latin America, and the medieval world. Our students develop skills in research, writing, and teaching that will prepare them for a variety of roles in academic settings. Most students who receive doctorates in the program go on to teach at colleges and universities. Our program aims to deepen students' scholarship within their major field of study while pushing them to understand the study of history as a comprehensive endeavor that may cross disciplinary boundaries.

Each year we admit 5-10 students out of a large and highly competitive pool of applicants, and a few more join us through associated programs with Notre Dame's Medieval Institute, the Program in the History and Philosophy of Science, and the Kroc Institute for Peace Studies It is the department's goal for students to complete the PhD within five years of full-time study. All of our students receive financial support for that period.

B. Special Programs.

C. Financial Aid. Graduate students admitted to the PhD program are guaranteed funding for full tuition and a stipend ($30,500 in 2023-24), for five years. Funding is also available to support travel to present research papers at conferences and for summer research fellowships.

The University also makes a number of fellowships available, some that are open to all graduate students and some that are open only to students studying in particular programs and subjects. The graduate school provides a searchable database of fellowships available for Notre Dame graduate students. Students should discuss University fellowship opportunities with Director of Graduate Studies.

The Department of History also encourages graduate students to seek outside fellowships for financial support. Such awards not only provide financial assistance, but act as formal recognition of the student's accomplishments and promise as researchers and scholars.

D. Degree Requirements. Please see our Graduate Guide on our web site at http://history.nd.edu/graduate_program/.
