Doctoral Program Information

A. Program Description. Wayne State University, a nationally ranked research institution, is located in the Midtown area of Detroit, MI. As nationally and internationally recognized scholars in their fields, our faculty are committed to providing quality teaching and involved mentorship to graduate students. Our doctoral program focuses on American history and the history of early modern and modern Europe, with supporting fields in World history, African, Asian, and Latin American history and a core of transnational specializations, including labor and urban history, women's and gender history, the history of science, environment, and technology, and the history of politics and policy. We offer training in archival administration and in public history, as well as access to world-class archival repositories with opportunities for museum and archival internships.

B. Special Programs. Doctoral students at Wayne State University have access to a wide variety of resources. The WSU Library system is ranked among the top 50 research libraries in the country and includes the Walter P. Reuther Library, Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs, which is the official repository for the UAW, UFW, SEIU, and the IWW; the Damon J. Keith collection on African American legal history, and important collections on the history of Detroit.

The Detroit Cultural Center is home to the Burton Collection of the Detroit Public Library, which specializes in the history of Michigan and the Old Northwest; the Louise Lovett Wright Research Library for African American history, with an emphasis on Detroit and Michigan; the Hackley Collection, which is a rich resource on African American arts, and the Detroit Historical Museum.

Our students have access to the rich resources in Canadian History at the Leddy Library at the University of Windsor and the Benton Ford Research Center, which is the repository of the Ford Motor Company and houses other rich sources on modern American history.

C. Financial Aid. The department awards one recruiting Rumble Fellowship each year. This award includes a full fellowship in the first year, along with a guarantee of financial support for the following two years. The department awards six graduate teaching assistantships each year. Each assistantship is renewable for up to three years. There are additional funding opportunities for doctoral students through both the department and the Graduate School, including the Graduate and Professional Scholarship, small doctoral research grants, summer dissertation fellowships, project-related graduate research assistantships, and travel grants to support graduate participation in professional conferences.

D. Degree Requirements. The PhD is defined as 90 credit hours beyond the baccalaureate, which is comprised of at least 40 hours of coursework in History, 8 hours in cognate courses, 12 hours of elective credits, and 30 hours in dissertation candidacy credits. Candidates who apply with a MA degree in History or a related field can transfer up to 30 credits hours of prior coursework. Reaching candidacy requires three written qualifying examinations followed by an oral exam and an approved prospectus. In addition, the student must demonstrate language proficiency, as defined by specific field requirements.
