Our faculty travel the world conducting research and bring that wealth of knowledge and expertise back to the classroom. Their research topics are wide-ranging from environmental history such as the history of water to ancient history and the study of medieval monasteries. They remain excited about their teaching and research while active in the process of historical inquiry.

Doctoral Program Information
A. Program Description. The Department of History offers a comprehensive program in all major chronological and geographical areas, with particular strength in African-American, Atlantic World, East Asian, Diplomatic, Islamic, Military, Early and Modern U.S., Women's and World History. We have recently added Environment, Health, Technology, and Science as a major field for graduate study.
B. Special Programs. Ohio State has wide variety of strong language departments, interdisciplinary departments (such as African and African American Studies, Comparative Studies, and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies) and interdisciplinary centers (such as the Center for Slavic and East European Studies, the East Asian Studies Center, the Middle East Studies Center, the Center for African Studies, the Center for Latin American Studies, and the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies). The Mershon Center is home to many national security and international relations programs and activities of interest to historians, hosting an array of faculty associates, conferences, and fellows. A vibrant program in the history of literacy is coordinated by the Department of English, involving many historians researching the print medium. The Harvey Goldberg Program within the Department of History is focused on electronic media.
C. Financial Aid. The students we admit are provided with financial packages comprising a mix of fellowships and teaching and research assistantships. Our basic TA package is for four years of University funding for students entering with an MA degree and five years for those entering with a BA. We also typically extend this for a dissertation year of funding upon competitive application. There are also a number of University fellowships for dissertation year research and writing.
D. Degree Requirements. The basic requirements to advance to candidacy include one required historiography course and a variety of reading and research seminars before completion of a written qualifying examination in the student's major field and a portfolio (consisting of seminar papers, mock syllabi, and the like) in each of two minor fields. For a student entering with a BA, the MA is awarded upon defense of a substantial research paper. We generally require competence in two foreign languages or their equivalent (such as quantitative skills). The student must complete a dissertation prospectus course, resulting in a formal prospectus, no later than the semester in which candidacy exams are taken. The dissertation defense is the final formal step in the program.
