C. Financial Aid. The Department makes every effort to recruit top applicants to its PhD program. In the 2025-2026 admission cycle, 80% of admitted PhD applicants received offers of financial support. The Department employs 25-30 graduate students per semester as teaching assistants and/or GPTIs. ABD doctoral students are eligible to hold Graduate Part-Time Instructor (GPTI) positions. These positions provide teaching experience and involve complete responsibility for one or more sections of an undergraduate course. Both T.A. and GPTI positions provide a stipend and tuition remission.
D. Degree Requirements. A minimum of 45 semester hours of post-baccalaureate course work at the 5000 level or above is required for the degree, including a minimum of six hours of seminar work at the 7000 level. With the approval of a candidate's advisor, up to 9 hours of prior graduate work in history, whether completed at the University of Colorado or elsewhere, may be transferred into the PhD program. A comprehensive examination, consisting of the composition, compilation, and oral defense of a student specific portfolio of scholarly work must be successfully completed before the candidate advances to the dissertation.
