Doctoral Program Information

A. Program Description. The Department of History at Texas Tech is a vibrant community of scholars with expertise in a wide range of fields. We approach the past from a variety of perspectives and conduct research in archives, libraries, and other venues in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the U.S. We have a strong undergraduate program, and at the graduate level, we offer both MA and PhD degrees.

B. Special Programs. In cooperation with the Museum Science Department, graduate students in History may include courses in museum science in their program towards a Minor in Museum Studies or work toward an MA degree in Museum Science with an emphasis in History.

Students may also concentrate in Archival Administration in cooperation with the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, which boasts archival resources in Turkish Oral History, the History of the Southwest Region, Music History, and a rare book collection approaching 40,000 volumes.

Additionally, students can utilize the resources of the Vietnam Center and Archive. Created in 1989, the Vietnam Archive has millions of pages of material and tens of thousands of photographs, slides, maps, periodicals, audio, moving images, and books related to the 20th century American wars in Southeast Asia.

C. Financial Aid. See the web page at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/financialaid/.

D. Degree Requirements. The doctoral program requires 60 hours (beyond the BA degree) plus 12 hours of Dissertation credit. Thirty of these 60 hours must be taken at Texas Tech University. The hours completed for the MA degree may satisfy the requirements for the doctorate, provided the MA and PhD projects are related. The MA degree has a thesis and a non-thesis track, both of which require 36 hours of credit beyond the BA. For additional details, see the web page at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/history/graduate/programs.php.
