Doctoral Program Information

A. Program Description. The Department of History offers two graduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and PhD. The Department directs doctoral dissertations according to the specialties of its individual faculty. See the Department website at www.humanities.mcmaster.ca/~history/graduate/prospective.html. The Department also offers a Graduate Diploma (PhD) in Gender Studies and Feminist Research.

B. Special Programs. MA in Globalization Studies is offered jointly by Political Science, English and History.

D. Degree Requirements. Minor Field seminars: 2 will be selected from the 700-level seminars offered in the Fall term. The grade for each minor field will be based on the seminar requirements, the examination and a historiographical paper, in combination as indicated by the minor field supervisor. Under exceptional circumstances a minor field may be taken in the second term.

Major Field seminar: Preparation begins in January and takes the form of supervised reading. Doctoral candidates will meet regularly with their field supervisors and submit written work from time to time.

Comprehensive examination, comprised of written and oral components, will be held in the month preceding September 15 of the second year of the program.
